Click Here To See A Secret Weapon For Crappie Fishing My Friend Discovered In 2004

The crappie is sometimes a very underestimated game fish that has many names such as calico bass, speckled perch, speckled bass, white perch, pole crappie, strawberry bass, and papermouth. Bait fishing for crappie in the fall can sometimes be very confusing. As the water starts to cool the crappies normal feeding and living patterns are unpredictable. Patterns you were anticipating and using in the late summer months may not work in the fall. The bait fish have stopped spawning so there is more competition for the remaining bait fish. The fact can actually work to your advantage, there are a few facts about bait fishing for crappie in the fall that you need to study on first.

It is true that the bait fish will be larger and you would think that you would need increase your crappie jig size in this fishing situation to match the size of the crappie’s food source and in many occasions you would be right. But what you need to understand in the late fall as the water temperature continues to drop, that the crappie’s metabolism will drop. and the paper mouth will not chase your crappie jigs unless you use a very slow bait fishing presentation.

Now I am going to tell you something that goes against your logic and what you would normally do when the food source for the pole crappie is at a larger size. In the later fall and winter you can use smaller jig sizes or use some method to slow way down your larger crappie jigs. The reason many crappie anglers use a smaller bait fishing presentation such as small jigs is because they float downward through the water at much slower pace and perfect for the slow and sluggish strawberry bass in the late fall and winter months.

OK I Mentioned above briefly that you can still use larger crappie jigs as your bait fishing method but they need to worked in the water very slowly. If you are going to fish for white perch with a larger crappie jig then you need to use a heavier line because heavy line sinks much slower in the water. Also you a slip bobber to fish in deeper water.

Also, When you catch your firstpole crappie clean the fish and see what the crappie has been eating so you can get a good idea of what the size of the bait fish are they are eating.

No Exit Popup Old School Crappie Fishing Course Link

The the crappie or called other names such as calico bass, speckled perch, speckled bass, white perch, pole crappie, strawberry bass, and paper mouth in many parts of the country is a very adaptable fish species. Right after the white perch are done spawning they may be inactive for about 2 weeks regaining their strength from the strenuous spawn. They will still hit crappie baits while bait fishing but they will not chase artificial crappie baits during this time. During this period a good crappie live bait selection such as a crappie minnow, shiner, or a small crayfish might be a better crappie bait to use. You can fish these crappie live baits with a fixed or slip bobber crappie fishing rig. You may want to choose the slip bobber rig because it is easier to adjust your depth until you find the paper mouth’s right depth and start catching crappie.

The pole crappie will move into the post spawn period after about two weeks. They will start to feed aggressively when they move into the post spawn period because they need build up new energy levels to match there increase activity levels as there metabolism increases. This is a great time to use multiple types of crappie baits to catch crappie.

During the post spawn period females will move to the edges of adjacent flats that are close to deep water, and in deeper lakes or reservoirs males will sometimes linger around shallow cover like brush piles and small weed clumps. A good way to go crappie fishing in these areas is by using crappie jigs tipped with live baits such as crappie minnows, shiners, fathead minnows or small crayfish. In shallow lakes these are primary areas that calico bass will head too. Many times in shallow lakes using crappie jigs with a plastic grub and tipped with a wax worm will catch crappie.

In deeper lakes and reservoirs paper mouth will head for deep weed lines or a near drop off into deep water. It’s very common to find the suspended at about 5 to 15 feet deep. Many crappie anglers will drift fish or troll over these locations with multiple crappie fishing rigs that have crappie jigs with soft plastic grubs or curly tails set at different depths. Sometimes setting up a crappie pole or two, set up with a live crappie bait such as a crappie minnow, shiner, or a small crayfish works well too.

Once you start catching crappie consistently at a certain depth and crappie bait, change your other crappie poles to the same bait and re-fish the area until you stop catching crappie.

The crappies all over their habitat range are called a lot of different names such as calico bass, speckled perch, speckled bass, white perch, pole crappies, strawberry bass, and paper mouth. When calico bass move into the pre summer period which happens when the water temperature goes into the 70 degree range. The pre-summer period is when the white perch, pole crappies move into their regular feeding patterns and they are much more predicable.

The pre-summer period is when the food chain is most plentiful and the speckled bass are in full feeding mode. You can catch crappie on just about any crappie bait using a variety of different crappie fishing rigs. white perch, pole crappies will be found in multiple locations such as weed beds, flats, breaks, and some will always be suspended. They may be concentrated in just one of these areas, but many times during the pre-summer period you will find strawberry bass at all of these locations at the same time.

You will be able to catch crappie with live bait or artificial crappie jigs. Also a combination of crappie jig heads tipped with crappie live bait such as crappie minnows, flat head minnows, shiners, and small crayfish will work well. Actually just about any crappie bait will work well during the pre-summer period.

In deep southern lakes and reservoirs papermoth will appear on primary and secondary points on the main lake where there is a break or drop off to deeper water. Deep timbered channel edges will also hold strawberry bass during the pre-summer period.

In northern lakes papermoth will move to area’s to establish themselves in the habitat they intend to stay with throughout the summer. As long as their natural food source remain the same the speckled bass will remain in these areas. That is why in northern lakes the papermoth will be very predicable during this period and crappie baits such as any live bait like crappie minnows, shiners, fathead minnows, small crayfish, and even fresh mussel meat will work to catch crappie during the pre-summer and summer periods.

Click Here To See Old School Crappie Fishing Secrets From 12 Backcountry Crappie Masters!

Reservoirs offer some fantastic crappie fishing if you know where to Look! The crappie species has been given odd names thought out the years such as calico bass, speckled perch, speckled bass, white perch, pole crappie, strawberry bass, and paper mouth. The key to catching crappie is understanding where the white perch are located in reservoirs during a certain seasonal period. You can have all the latest and greatest crappie fishing gear but it will not do you any good if cannot locate any calico bass.

A reservoir typically is defined as body of water that has been created by damming up a river. Types of reservoirs vary drastically so you need to do your home work before you go crappie fishing in one of these water impoundments and expect to catch crappie. The good thing about reservoirs is that they are man made so in most cases topographical map information is available to do your planning for your next crappie fishing trip.

Reservoirs are classified by their topography type based on the river that was dammed. Like I said before all reservoirs are not the same. Reservoirs range from large deep flooded canyons to shallow lowland wetland impoundments and each different reservoir type will have it’s own unique classification in order to develop your crappie fishing pattern.

One thing that is common about all reserervoirs is that strawberry bass thrive in the majority of them so its well worth the effort to learn what needed to go crappie fishing in them. Just about any crappie bait such as live baits like small shad, crappie minnows, shiners flathead minnows and small crayfish can be used to catch crappie.

Typically a reservoir can be divided into three areas when you are doing your planning. Of course the deepest end will be area number one. This is the area closest to the dam in every reservoir. Area number two is where the new creek arm created by the damming blends in with the old creek channel. This area is always a good spot to locate papermouth and it is likely you can catch crappie here.

A good method of fishing for crappie in area number two is by setting up a number of your crappie fishing rigs at various depths tipped with live bait and artificial crappie jigs. When you start to catch crappie you can anchor off and continue to fish. Make sure you change the depth of all your crappie rods to the same depth that you started catching crappie. Area three is the shallowest of the three areas and is typically the farthest distance away from the dam. Typically these areas are great locations to catch crappie because there is abundance of good forage for crappie food. There also an abundance of structure in this area and during the spring this the area of the reservoir you want to fish because the calico bass will spawn here

I want to thank you for reading my article about Crappie Food Chain. Have a great day and the the best of luck to you on your next fishing trip

Old School Crappie Fishing Family Secrets

crappies have some amazing names that local fisherman have given them over the years such as calico bass, speckled perch, speckled bass, white perch, pole crappie, strawberry bass, and paper mouth you would think you were being took by a bunch of con artists. The crappie spawning season typically starts when water temperature ranges between 64 to 72 fare height speckled bass do not spawn at the same time which is why you can still catch crappies while bait fishing with various crappie live baits and crappie artificial baits during the spawn. Actually even crappies on their nest will attack a crappie bait that is placed near their nest.

The speckled bass spawning period is different in different parts of the speckled bass‘s habitat range. In Florida the paper mouth typically spawn between march and april. In Alabama and Georgia it is also between march and April. In Texas and Oklahoma the strawberry bass spawn starts in march and continues through May. In Kentucky and Tennesse the strawberry bass spawn falls between April and May. In Missouri, Illinois, and Iowa the speckled bass spawn occurs between April and June, Ohio pole crappie have a spawning period between April through July. Oregon has a spawning period between march and June. In Minnesota , Michigan, and Wisconsin the paper mouth spawn between May and June. In Ontario Canada the speckled bass spawn between June and August.

The first paper mouth to spawn in any areas will be the ones located in backwater coves and bays. The last last speckled bass to spawn are the ones located on north facing bays and lake shorelines that warm slowly.

During the actual spawn the female will leave the her eggs the leave he next and the male will guard the next. The male speckled perch will fan the eggs until the fry hatch. The eggs will typically hatch in about one week. The male will remain and guard the fry for about two weeks after the hatch. During the spawn to catch male crappie you will need to put your crappie bait right over the nest. Crappie crank baits or crappie jigs fished vertically will work. The male crappie will attack just about anything that comes close to the nest during this period . The female crappies can be caught in deeper water because that is where they head after they lay their eggs A good way to find the female white perch After the spawn is to drift deep water structure points near the edges using multiple crappie fishing rigs with a variation of live crappie baits as well as artificial crappie baits.

Old School Crappie Fishing Family Secrets

crappies are often mentioned by local fisherman with names such as calico bass, speckled perch, speckled bass, white perch, pole crappie, strawberry bass and papermouth. This fish species is a migrational by nature and tends to follow the natural forage. When you are bait fishing for crappie you need to take into account the seasonal habits and locations. In addition to selecting the crappie baits you need to understand where the speckled bass will be located during the season of the year you are crappie fishing.

To catch crappie while bait fishing it is not enough to just select a good crappie bait. You nee to understand the pole crappie’s diet and activity levels and behavior. Their is no set calendar for the changing seasons when you are targeting crappie. Actually the changing of the seasons is dicated by the needs of the papermouth. The changes of physical seasons forces the the speckled perch to change their habits because they will need to seek the type of habitat that allows them to still locate a good abundant food source.

The bottom line is that speckled bass change their habits, feeding patterns and location to seek out an abundant food source, and in many respects is the driving force of their annual migrations from one area to another. So you probably are smart folks and figured out already that you much change your crappie fishing techniques with the changing seasons too. You will be have to be making changes to your crappie bait and crappie fishing rig selections with the change of seasons when you are bait fishing for crappie.

We all wish we could change our crappie fishing style by looking at the calendar but unfortunately it just doesn’t work that way. The typical changes we see on land with the change of the seasons such as from winter to spring, from spring to summer, summer to fall , and fall to winter are not the same under the water. Under the water changes are dictated by the length of daylight which is known as the photo period. Animals from small microorganisms such as zooplankton all the way up to the fiercest of game fish react to these changes. The change in the length of daylight will cause speckled perch to migrate, spawn, and to change their feeding habits.

There are a few crappie fishing calendars that can be purchased that identify specific details of what when and where for crappie fishing seasonal changes. The best one I have come across is published by in-Fisherman and is designed to identify seasonal changes based on the fishing activity levels and seasonal needs of the calico bass.

But what you need to understand in the late fall as the water temperature continues to drop, that the crappie’s metabolism will drop. and the calico bass will not chase your crappie jigs unless you use a very slow bait fishing presentation.

Now I am going to tell you something that goes against your logic and what you would normally do when the food source for the speckled bass is at a larger size. In the later fall and winter you can use smaller jig sizes or use some method to slow way down your larger crappie jigs. The reason many crappie anglers use a smaller bait fishing presentation such as small jigs is because they float downward through the water at much slower pace and perfect for the slow and sluggish paper mouth in the late fall and winter months.

OK I Mentioned above briefly that you can still use larger crappie jigs as your bait fishing method but they need to worked in the water very slowly. If you are going to fish for strawberry bass with a larger crappie jig then you need to use a heavier line because heavy line sinks much slower in the water. Also you a slip bobber to fish in deeper water.

Also, When you catch your firstcrappie clean the fish and see what the crappie has been eating so you can get a good idea of what the size of the bait fish are they are eating.

Well that concludes my article about Crappie Minnows. Have a great day!

Old School Crappie Fishing Family Secrets

The crappie is a very plentiful game fish that goes by many different names such as calico bass, speckled perch, speckled bass, white perch, pole crappie, stawberry bass and papermouth, Selecting the right crappie fishing reel to match your crappie rod is important to have a well balanced crappie fishing rig. There are three types of reels you can select from and all of them work in different situations. The three types you can choose from are the bait casting reel, the spinning reel, and the spin cast reel. Of the three crappie fishing reels the bait caster is the one you most likely will never use when you are crappie fishing because they are not suitable to fish with light test line and small crappie jigs. Stawberry bass it casters are only used in very special situations as crappie fishing rigs.

The most popular crappie reel is the spin cast reel because it is simple to use, but the spinning reel holds a very close second in popularity. The spin cast reel has a simple push button when you cast that releases the line. Spin cast reels are a good choice for beginning stawberry bass fisherman as a crappie fishing rig selection because they are a great reel when you are first learning to cast. But there are many veterans who prefer them over spinning reel because of the soft delivery that’s needed when fishing crappie live baits.

Pole crappie spinning reels which are commonly referred to open faced reels, also make a good choice for any crappie fishing rigs. Spinning reels are excellent choice for crappie fishing because you use very light test line to fish 1/64oz crappie jigs very easy. However spinning or open face reels are not like the spin cast reel that operates with a push button. Spin cast reels operate by opening or closing what is called a bail. When the bail is released you hold the line so it doesn’t curl off the spool and then cast. Once you cast the bail will close when you turn the handle. Casting spinning reels takes a bit more practice, but is still a goos choice for a crappie fishing rig.

Here’s a few stawberry bass fishing rig tips that may help you.

Tip#1 If you are using a papermouth spin cast reel and just can’t get your cast far enough to where the crappie are located, switch to a spinning ultralight reel. These reels release line quickly and farther.

Tip#2 Always get the drag on your paper mouth reel by pulling the line from the rod tip. For example get your self a large lure with multiple treble hooks and cast it out onto the grass in your back yard make it hook into the grass then reel tight and set your drag.
