Click Here To See A Secret Weapon For Crappie Fishing My Friend Discovered In 2004

ARTICLE 112 Understanding the crappies feeding habits What Do Crappies Eat?

One of the most important key ingredients to developing a consistent crappie fishing pattern to find and catch crappie begins and ends with the golden question: What are the crappies eating? Determining what the crappie forage is and learning the habits of the crappies food chain means one thing catch crappie!

The the crappie is a very sought after species of fish which goes by many different names through out the country such as calico bass, speckled bass, speckled perch, white perch, pole crappie, strawberry bass, and paper mouth. The strawberry bass has exceptional night vision and their eyes are the biggest of any other game fish when compared to their body size. This fact gives the crappie a distinct advantage over it’s crappie food such as zooplankton ,small shad, perch fry, shiners, crappie minnows, fathead minnows anywhere there is low light conditions. This is the main reason that strawberry bass turn on at dawn, and sunset and feed aggressively at night. If you have ever thought of going night fishing for crappie you would make a good choice because the speckled bass is very active at night.

The white perch is like many other preditors in the sense that they develop a close relationship with their prey. Once the conection is established where you find one you will find the other. Foe example if you notice that there is a new hatch of crappie minnows swimming near some weed growth you can bet there are some strawberry bass close by feeding on them. You can use this connection to your advantage when you are selecting your crappie fishing baits. Determine what the forage is the strawberry bass crappie are feeding on at a certain location then select either your crappie artificial baits or crappie live baits to match as closely as possible. The more detail you include here the better your crappie catch will be. For example if the crappie are feeding on crappie minnows than an excellent crappie bait would be a crappie jig tipped with live crappie minnows or a artificial crappie jig and soft plastic that resembles a crappie minnow.

The connection between the prey and the speckled bass normally begins when three conditions occur. The number on condition that triggers the start of the connection is when there is a large population of a certain crappie forage food such as in our example crappie minnows. The number two condition is the prey are vulnerable such as when they are moving in migration or spawning. or example at night where the crappie have a distinct advantage. The number three connection is when a certain forage exsists in locations that the pole crappie are spawning.

Catching crappie in hill land reservoirs

Hill land reservoirs much like flatland reservoirs hold large populations of crappie any trophy crappie will be there for the taking. Crappies have some amazing names that local fisherman have given them over the years such as calico bass, speckled bass, speckled perch, white perch, pole crappie, strawberry bass, and paper mouth.

Hill land reservoirs have many fingers and branches that originate from the main basin of the original river channel. These reservoirs are much deeper that flatland reservoirs but they are not as wide because these reservoirs are constricted by the adjoining hills. The main creek or river channel will not be located close to shore. Use your depth finder , a good topographical map to find the orginal channel, then record the gps coordinates for future use. The creek arms are full of sunken timber are paper mouth magnets. The water color in these waters can range from clear to a greenish tinge to even stained. The color can vary on the season of the year. Because rainfalls in the spring will turn the water color murky.

Catching crappie in these lakes can be easier if you know where to go. The pole crappie in these reservoirs will migrate to new locations with the change of seasons. Crappie food will include small gizzard shad (in some reservoirs), small threadfin shad (in some reservoirs),crappie minnows, shiners, and insects. Crappie jigs with plastic grubs, or plastic tubes and tipped with wax worms will work fine for crappie bait when you fish near submerged timber areas in the creak arms. You can also catch crappie in the original creek channel using crappie live baits such as small gizzard shad, threadfin shad, crappie minnows, shiners, or small crayfish. You will want to use multiple crappie rods rigged with various crappie baits fished at different depths. Once you start to catch crappie anchor off and reset all your crappie poles to the depth and the bait you caught your first strawberry bass. You can also use ultra light crappie crank baits trolled or casted casted along the edge of structure such as sunken timber or drop offs.

Durring the spring and summer large crappies will follow shad schools and feed almost entirely of fresh shad as their diet. If you you can find the shad schools you can have great success catching crappie. Some of the most popular crappie jigs you use are Gum Drop Tubes,Micro Jelly Jig,Bailey’s Crappie Magnet,Micromini Jig, and Mizmo Mini Tube.

Article 110 Seasonal Changes and crappie How Do they relate?

The crappies behavior will change as the seasons change. crappies can adapt and live in just about any type of lake and they go by names throughout the country such as calico bass, speckled bass, speckled perch, white perch, pole crappie, strawberry bass and papermouth. The The speckled perch will suspend more in late summer and through the winter and will stay close to sructure during the long spring period into the early summer period. You can catch crappie with a variety of crappie artificial baits such as crappie jigs, or you can use crappie baits like crappie jigs tipped with soft plastic grubs and wax worms. Crappie live baits like crappie minnows, shiners, small gizzard shad, maggots, panfish leeches, and crayfish will work well too. The clearer the water is the more likely that The pole crappie at greater depths no mater what seasonal period it is.

Under the ice, The strawberry bass will suspend 5 to 10 feet from the bottom and will feed primarily on zooplakton,or they feed on crappie minnows, small crayfish and other small crustations. The The speckled bass will also feed on thread fin shad that are feeding on plankton, and small gizzard shad populations in habitats that they are available. To catch crappie under the ice you can use nice shinny crappie ice fishing jigs tipped with live crappie minnows. You will want to use a portable fish finder to locate the crappie , then cut at least three hole in a triangle and set 3 different crappie ice fishing set ups set at different depths. Once you start catching crappie in one of the ice holes reset your other lines to the same depth. In the south where there is no ice follow the shad schools or target suspended crappie to catch fish. You can use conventional crappie fishing tackle such as crappie jigs and crappie live bait here.

At the end of the winter period crappie will start their migration to the shallows or staging areas until ice out or the water temperature rises above 42 degrees. Some of the shallow areas will be black bottom bays, closed end channels, and old reed beds. These areas tend to warm faster in the early spring period. Typically fish will stay and will stay shallows until after the crappie spawn and into early summer. Where they will migrate to main lake, or main reservoir locations. In rivers there may not be much of a migration because crappie do not like current.

The strawberry bass migration right after ice out will be to find crappie food and will not be related to the spawing grounds. In natural lakes the speckled perch will stage near shallow structure during the early spring or pre-spawn period. The speckled perch will be feeding aggressively and just about any crappie fishing bait such as crappie jigs or crappie bait fish such as crappie minnows or shiners will work. Some popular crappie artificial baits include popular crappie fishing jigs such as the Flu Flu, Chubby Jig, Puddle Jumper, Zetabait Wobbly Eye Jig, Custom Jigs & Spin Shrimpo, Blue Fox Foxee Jig, and the Lindy – Little Joe Timber Jig. For added excitement you can tip these artificial crappie baits with wax worms, maggots, crappie minnows, shiners, redworms, live nymphs,or crayfish. To ad some flash for even more attraction add a safety pin spinner to your crappie jig, or switch up your crappie bait to one to a popular crappie spinner bait such as a Blakemore Road Runner, Tad’s Cricket Spin,Terminator Tiny T, and the Bomber Mini – Whacker.

I want to thank you for reading my article about Safety Pin Spinner. Have a great day!

Click Here To See A Secret Weapon For Crappie Fishing My Friend Discovered In 2004

In low – land reservoirs you can go crappie fishing much like in natural lakes. Crappie will be called such names by the locals such as calico bass, speckled perch, speckled bass, white perch, pole crappie, strawberry bass, and papermouth. Low land reservoirs will hold good populations of calico bass. You will be able to catch crappie with traditional crappie baits in these reservoirs.

Low land reservoirs are th shallowest of the impoundment reservoirs. Many times these reservoirs are no more then 15 foot in depth. The deepest part of low land reservoirs will be the old river channel close to the dam area. Low land reservoirs will have vast flats with timber and thick vegetation ideal habit for crappieThere is little current in these reservoirs so your crappie fishing patterns will be similar to those you use in a natural lake. For example in a natural lake that is fairly clear water with an abundance of weed vegetation you would concentrate crappie fishing along the edges using various crappie baits like crappie jigs and plastic grubs tipped with wax worms or livebaits such as crappie minnows, flathead minnows, shiners or small crayfish. In low land reservoirs that are clear with abundant vegetation you would follow the same pattern.

You will locate paper mouth by fishing the edges of weed beds and submerged brush (just like my example above). You will also find crappie in the old creek channel or river bed. You will also be ale to catch crappie in large flats where there are roaming calico bass by drifting. Many times you will also find speckled perch in the wide inlet areas of the reservoir.

Low land reservoirs will also have many shallow bays and low islands that are crappie magnets that are great locations for catching crappie. You can drift these areas with your crappie rods set at deferent depths with a combination of crappie rods set up with a crappie jig and a plastic grub tipped with wax worms and also crappie live bait such as crappie minnows or shiners.

You can also go crappie fishing by drifting or trolling points that have a hard bottom. These areas will normally hold roaming papermouth. You can sometimes catch crappie using submerged crappie crank baits and this is an excellent crappie fishing technique to find what depth the papermouth are located.

Just a note of reference, the old main river or channel will seldom be close to the shore line. This area is always a hotspot for white perch. A good way to locate the old channel is using a topographical map in combination with a GPS and good fishing finder.

If you target submerged structure along the edges of the old channel you can catch crappie. You can use a re variety of different crappie baits that will allow you to fish very close to the old river channels edge and drop your bait into the drop off. This is an excellent technique to catch crappie that are suspended there

I have had a great time writing this article we hope you enjoyed our information about Papermouth. We wish you the best of luck on your next fishing trip!

Click Here To See A Secret Weapon For Crappie Fishing My Friend Discovered In 2004

Flatland reservoirs water impoundments are a Mecca for catching crappie and just about any crappie baits will work if you know where to look. Crappies are often mentioned by local fisherman with names like calico bass, speckled perch, speckled bass, white perch, pole crappie, and papermouth. Many of the most famous speckled bass lakes such as Barkley Lake, Kentucky Lake, and Santee-Cooper are flatland reservoirs. These bodies of water all have shallow basins that extend from the main river channel and they slowly move through farmland and low hills. These lakes also include arms that are former tributary creeks, that are fed only in the spring.

Flatland reservoirs are crappie hotspots because they are fertile, offer abundant vegetation which can cover 50% surface area. You will want to go crappie fishing on the edge of weeds, along flooded timber areas, brushy banks, and stumps.

In murky flatland reservoirs you can catch crappie in the brush and stump areas using crappie fishing jigs with plastic grubs, and plastic tubes tipped with wax worms. Some of the most popular crappie jigs plastics include Northland’s gum drop tube, Turner Jones micro jelly jig, Bailey’s crappie magnet, Turner Jones micromini jig, Southern Pro umbrella tube, Mizmo mini tube, Mizmo earth-tone tube (Mini Thunder Rattle) Berkley power micro tube, and Turner Jones micro shrimp. You can also use crappie live baits such as crappie minnows, flathead minnows, shiners, shad, leeches, earthworms, chubs, crayfish, herring, and alewives. You will also find crappie in the old river channel. You will want to fish the ledges where the edge of the channel is located. You may have some good luck with crappie jigs such as Northland’s gum drop tube, Turner Jones micro jelly jig, Bailey’s crappie magnet, Turner Jones micromini jig, Southern Pro umbrella tube, Mizmo mini tube, Mizmo earth-tone tube (Mini Thunder Rattle) Berkley power micro tube, and Turner Jones micro shrimp tipprd with live baits here. You could also use crappie crank baits trolled along the edge of the ledge where the drop off is located. Some old reliable crappie lure baits that have proven the test of time are Rapala, Blue Fox, Bill Lewis (Rat-L-Trap), Storm, Rebel, and Lindy – Little Joe.

The crappie food base in flatland reservoirs is exceptionally abundant and all these areas hold large populations of calico bass. Flatland reserevoirs will many times have a good population of trophy crappie because of the abundence of crappie food. Well that concludes our article about flatland reservoirs.

Click Here To See A Secret Weapon For Crappie Fishing My Friend Discovered In 2004

Crappies have numerous different names that include calico bass, speckled perch, speckled bass, white perch, pole crappie, strawberry bass, and papermouth. They are also plentiful at different speckled bass locations throughout the lower 48 states and parts of southern Canada . A simple equation that will work every time to catch crappie is speckled bass + Location + presentation = success!

We are going to break this equation down into what this equation means in our article today. One of te most important things you must learn to be consistently successful at catching crappie is understanding the classifying of pole crappie waters. One very important fact you need to understand when classifying papermouth waters is that Similar papermouth waters in one location of the country will behave the same a similar waters in another part of the country. Foe example, speckled bass in cloudy pounds and natural lakes in the north will react the same as cloudy pounds and natural lakes in the south. The key to this comparison is understanding the cloudy pounds and natural lakes in the north waters classification process.

If you learn to to classify strawberry bass waters correctly you can converse with crappie fisherman all over the country. You can use crappie fishing skills no matter what location you intend to go crappie fishing.

You can eliminate a great deal of fishing waters by understanding the needs of the crappie and what type of habitat they need to survive. For example the crappie is primary a warm water fish so you could elimate any oligotropic lakes which are very cold and normally only hold populations of cold water fish species such as trout and walleye. We are going to concentrate on the different lake categories and what type of crappie baits may work best to catch crappie in these locations in today’s article.

Lakes can be classified in three enviremenal age groups such as oligotropic, mesotropic, and eutropic. In geological terms oligothropic lakes are the youngest. Mesotropic lakes are considered to middle aged while eutrophic lakes are considered to be the oldest of lake. Lakes change constantly se even your local crappie lake is changing daily. The aging process for lakes is called eutrophication. During the eutrophication process structural makeup, food chains, vegetation , and the dominate fish speices will be changing. Many times these changes are very subtle and may take years to change significantly.

You will be able to catch crappie in these lakes using a variety of different crappie fishing baits. You can use crappie live baits such as crappie minnows, shiners, fathead minnows, small crayfish and wax worms. You can use crappie fishing jigs with plastic grubs. You can use crappie jigs tipped with live baits such as crappie minnows, and wax worms or even small crayfish. You can make your crappie jigs into safety pin spinner baits and also have some crappie fishing success. There are just thousands of different crappie bait combinations you can use at any lake that holds good populations of strawberry bass.

Click Here To See A Secret Weapon For Crappie Fishing My Friend Discovered In 2004

Article 108

Catching suspended crappie in confined open water

True open water involves vast expanses of water over 20ft feet in depth. “Confined open water” defines areas of open water adjacent or near to shallow structural elements. The crappie is a very popular game fish that young, old, and novice and experienced fisherman have given names such as calico bass, speckled bass, speckled perch, white perch, pole crappie, strawberry bass, and papermouth. The paper mouth is a suspending species of fish but not a true open water fish like the steelhead, stripper bass, or salmon. True open water fish are streamlined, and powerful and able to cover large distances in a short period of time. The calico bass is not built for speed or power and stay near structure where most of the crappie food is located.

In lake and reservoirs where there is submerged timber lines key suspending crappie depths will be 30 to 55 ft deep. Using a slip bobber rig with a crappie jig tipped with a plastic grub and wax worm will work here. Try using weedless hooks on your crappie jigs and make sure you have enough weight to get your crappie jig down 30ft quickly. The weight of your crappie jig and a large split shot should do the trick. You can also use crappie jigging spoons tipped with crappie minnows and shiners. In stable weather there also will be suspended crappie just above the timber tops of the trees located out on the edge of the timber line.

Environmental circumstances will determine the paper mouth position on a timbered point. When weather conditions are mild and stable suspended crappie will be located high in the tree tops or they will move to shallower trees, but rarely in water less then 15ft deep. Yo can sometimes run suspended crappie artificial baits such as crappie crank baits at a specified depth and you will catch some speckled bass. Cold fronts, and fridgid wate or a drop in water levels will push the pole crappie into deeper water and into dense cove in the heart of the trees. These fish will have a negative feeding mood and will be hard to catch.

Suspended crappies in timberline areas are fun to catch once you learn where they are located at and at what depth. Just keep in mind that you can use a variety of different crappie baits such as crappie live baits like crappie minnows, gizzard shad, threadfin shad, shiners, fathead minnows, and even small crayfish to catch crappie. Or switch it up and a use a combination of artificial crappie jigs tipped with crappie live bait. Just use your imagination. 75 percent of you fishing is going to be finding the paper mouth location.

Crappies naturally will suspend at certain depth where they are in close proximity of any unsuspecting prey. Crappies typically are called many different names by local fisherman such as calico bass, speckled bass, speckled perch, white perch, pole crappie, strawberry bass, and papermouth. papermouth are notorious up feeders so they will suspend at depths that they can attack their prey above them or to the side of them, but never below them. You will want to place your crappie bait presentations, like crappie live baits and artificial crappie jigs so the are at eye level, in front, to the side of , or above suspended white perch.

In natural lakes white perch will relate to the deepest edge points of weedlines. The

paper mouth will also suspend at the edge of drop offs and hard pan to mucky bottom break lines. It’s critical that you have a sensitive and accurate depth finder, fish finder to fish for suspended crappie. You nee this very valuable piece of your crappie fishing tackle to identify potential areas that the paper mouth will be suspended at.

In late summer suspended crappie will be located at the edge of deep growing, low lying weed. If this type of vegetation is common throughout the lake you are fishing, a good crappie fishing pattern would be to fish these edges using a variety of crappie baits such as crappie jigs and soft plastic grubs or tubes tipped with wax worms, or crappie live baits such as crappie minnows or shiners.

In lakes where weed lines do not extend all the way to the edge of drop offs, white perch will be suspended just of the drop off point at a depth equal to the bottom of the weed line. The suspend at this depth to wait for unsuspecting prey coming in and out of the weeds, like small bait fish or small crayfish. In very clear lakes weed lines will typically grow past and down into the drop off. papermouth will often suspend at the horizontal and vertical positions clos to the edge of the weeds, here again waiting for unsuspecting prey.

In very clear lakes or reservoirs you will want to use crappie baits such as live crappie minnows, shiners, crayfish, or shad if they are native to your lake or reservoir, using ultralight crappie fishing tackle. You will want very thin dia test lines like 2 to 4lb test monofilament or 8lb braided fire line. You will need to use very small artificial crappie fishing baits like crappie jigs with plastic grubs and tubes. Some of the more popular crappie fishing jigs that work well are .

Click Here To See A Secret Weapon For Crappie Fishing My Friend Discovered In 2004

Not all rivers just like not all lakes hold crappie. Crappies all over their habitat range are called a lot of different names such as calico crappie, speckled perch, speckled bass white perch, pole crappie, strawberry bass, and papermouth. Typically warm water river basins like the Mississippi will hold pole crappie in their back water areas which can be quite expansive.

Typically you will catch crappie in river systems that are middle aged in geological terms. These rivers are slow flowing, shallow and have large flood planes that many times create large back water areas that are excellent calico crappie habitat areas to catch crappie. River systems from Minnesota to Louisiana that have back water areas will hold large populations of white perch. You will find papermouth in backwater areas that are out of current. pole crappie will thrive in these areas if there is an abundant crappie food chain for forage. Head for brush piles, stump fields, deadfalls, and wood cover.

The average depth in many of these river back water areas is typically 5 to 6 ft so a flat bottom boat will work best to get to these areas. Because of the numerous stumps make sure you use a prop on your motor that is not stainless steel so you will shear your pin or just dent your prop if you hit a stump. This will save from loosing a lower end on your outboard motor.

There are many different crappie fishing baits that you can use to catch crappie in these areas. Crappie live baits such as small threadfin shad and gizzard shad work well if they are caught fresh and fish while still alive. Crappie minnows, flathead minnows, shiners, small crayfish will work well too. Crappie fishing jigs with soft plastic grubs tipped with live baits such as crappie minnows, wax works work well also. Or you can use a crappie jig with just a small crayfish.

You can also use crappie jigs with soft plastic grub imitations or a small crayfish Imitation also. To make these bait more inticing to the papermouth you could tip them with wax worm to make the speckled perch Crappie crank baits will work well fished on the edge lines of brush stump fields, and weedlines. To fish your crappie jig setups use a small fixed or slip bobber that is easily adjusted for depth. You will want a long crappie fishing rod to extend over into hard to get to brush areas. Also.

Old School Crappie Fishing Family Secrets

Crappie are a most adaptable species of gamefish and fisherman all over the country call them different names such as calico bass, speckled perch, speckled bass, white perch, pole crappies strawberry bass, and papermouths. During the post summer period of the year the underwater ecosystem is in complete reversal. The post summer ecosystem reversal is the complete opposite of the pre-summer period where the ecosystem is gearing up full speed. The water temperature is cooling rapidly compared to the prime summer period and many things are changing daily including the crappies mood, and feeding patterns.

Crappie fishing during the post summer period is often quite unpredictable. Sometimes crappie fishing baits you were using in the peak of the summer period such as crappie live baits like crappie minnows, shiners, fathead minnows, small crayfish, or mussel meat will work. Other times you may have to mix your crappie baits up with a combination crappie jigs and live bait or even crappie jigs and soft plastics tipped with live bait like wax worms or a small crappie minnow.

During the post summer period speckled bass are feeding on what is left of the forage that existed during the prime summer period. All of the paper mouth food chain is in decline. Water levels are at their lowest point of the year drive the white perch to deeper areas of their habitats. The crappies will hold tight together in cover that is available in these deep areas. The paper mouth typically will not suspend during the post summer period. Locate some deep structure points and you probably will catch crappie. A good crappie fishing technique that works well in this period of the year is to use crappie jigs tipped with live bait with a safety pin spinner fished slowly. Go crappie fishing along the edges of deep weeded areas and deep timber lines. You will need to find the paper mouth by fishing as many structure edge lines as you can find until you start catching crappie. The white perch will typically hole up in tight schools during the post summer period and if you can find these schools you can catch some crappie.
