Click Here To See A Secret Weapon For Crappie Fishing My Friend Discovered In 2004

The crappie is one of the most sought after gamefish from both beginner and expert fisherman and goes by many aliases such as calico bass, speckled bass, white perch, pole crappie, strawberry bass, and papermouth. The white perch feed on a variety of different food sources but their primary food chain includes small crappie bait fish such as fathead minnows, small aquatic insects, such as damselfly larva,or dragon fly larva, and crustaceans such as small crayfish. The calico bass will be close by if you can locate one of these food choices they are feeding on and then imitate your bait fishing crappie bait to match as natural as possible. The closer you can match your crappie bait fishing selection to there natural food source the better luck you will have.

Papermouth will feed on a variety of bait fish through out the year. The species of bait fish that the speckled bass feed on depends on a variety of different factors such as the season of the year and the area of the country you are fishing. For example if you are bait fishing for white perch in a farm pond in the spring and early summer you would probably use small sunfish fry to fish as a live bait or a artificial bait presentation. Small sunfish fry are typically abundant in farm ponds at the time of your and crappie love to feed on them when they are available. Or for example for example if you were fishing in southern waters and the area of water you are fishing on has large populations of threadfin or gizzard shad then you would locate the shad schools to go bait fishing for crappie.

Strawberry Bass are opportunists and will adapt to the food source that is available to them. For example if there is a new hatch of mayfly larva in the water that you are fishing a good bait fishing selection would be live mayflies or a mayfly larva imitation because chance are any crappie or other game fish in the area will feeding on the mayfly larva.

Know most fisherman think to use crustaceans for crappie bait but the truth be told small crustaceans such as small crayfish under 2″ in length make a large portion of the crappies daily diet. Another bait fish that is seldom used for calico bass are small goldfish and when traditional bait fish selection are not working sometimes fishing with small gold fish will be the answer. Unlike other non traditional crappie baits such as threadfin and gizzard shad that need to be caught in the wild, goldfish are sold at just about any bait shop throughout the united states.

Click Here To See A Secret Weapon For Crappie Fishing My Friend Discovered In 2004

The crappie is one of the most popular game fish in North America. and parts of Canada and understanding some basic crappie bait fishing information may help you to catch more crappie. The crappie is called many things and go by names such as calico bass, speckled perch, speckled bass, white perch, pole crappie, strawberry bass, and papermouth throughout the United States.

The main reason pole crappie are so popular is their abundance. pole crappie are not one of the best fighting fish that are caught while fishing but they are very tasty. Another good reason is because the fishing rigs to catch crappie are reasonably inexpensive. In fact for about 20$ you could be ready to go crappie fishing. Even when you decide to get real serious about crappie fishing you can purchase a really good crappie bait fishing rig for under 200$. Actually the pole crappie species of fish is a excellent fish to target if you are just learning to fish. Once pole crappie are located they can be caught using a simple crappie fishing rig that has a bobber, split shot, a sinker, a hook and a crappie minnow as bait.

There are two types of strawberry bass species that you can target when you go bait fishing and they are the white strawberry bass and the black white perch. Both are found only in North America. Both white and black pole crappie are part of the sunfish family. Both white crappie and black white perch can be caught using the same bait fishing methods. And both white and black pole crappie can be found in the same water locations.

White white perch prefer stained or muddy waters that have soft substitutes. The black calico bass is a little bit more particular about the water they live in, and they prefer cool clearer water and they like to habitat close to aquatic vegetation with a firm bottom. Many crappie anglers who go bait fishing for crappie on a regular basis don’t care what species of they catch just so it’s a crappie.

I want to thank you for reading my article about strawberry bass. We wish you the best of luck on your next fishing trip!

Article number 111 Natural lake Fall Crappie Movements

As the water starts to cool in natural lakes much of the weed growth on the flats dies off. Some deep lying weeds will remain along the deep edge of weed growth along drop offs. After the weed growth dies off crappies holding in shallow flats will join crappie along drop off edges, so this is one of the locations you will want to target your crappie fishing efforts. Crappies holding in open water will also head for drop off edges. The the crappie is a very sought after species of fish which goes by many different names through out the country such as calico bass, speckled bass, speckled perch, white perch, pole crappie, strawberry bass, and paper mouth. Once the papermouth have moved to drop off ledges normally they will continue to hold there or move to close by deeper rock cover if it is available. You can catch crappie by using crappie jigs tipped with live crappie baits such as crappie minnows, flathead minnows, shiners, and shad if they are there. Fish your crappie baits just vertical or horizontal to identified drop off edge locations or deep rock cover approximately 5 to 10 feet off bottom, speckled bass will typically hold at these depths during the late fall going into winter. In natural lakes you will find drop off edges in a variety of different crappie fishing locations. Look for edges there is remaining weed growth such as at locations inside bends in the lake. You will also find excellent drop off edges where there is combination of remaining weed growth and rock cover. Your prime crappie fishing locations to concentrate on in the fall season will be where there is remaining weed growth, and rock cover combined together and adjacent to a drop off into deeper water. You will normally find these locations along bends in the lake contour. Fall strawberry bass will be normally be feeding on plankton or crappie minnows or shad that are feeding on the plankton. A good fall crappie bait would be artifical crappie baits that resemble crappie minnows or shad or Live crappie baits such as crappie minnows, small shad, shiners, and fathead minnows. You can also use small crayfish when you are fishing off the bottom in rock cover. As the remaining weed beds die off pole crappie will move to rock piles, humps, sloop points, that drop into the lake basin, and transitional points that go from a hard pan bottom to a soft mucky bottom. Concentrate your crappie fishing efforts after the weed die off to the areas just mentioned.

Click Here To See A Secret Weapon For Crappie Fishing My Friend Discovered In 2004

Yes crappies which go by peculiar names such as calico bass, speckled perch, speckled bass, white perch, pole crappies, strawberry bass, and papermouth can be caught during the coldwater period of fall and early winter. The cold water period typically starts after the water has turned over and the thermocline stratified Also The water temperatures will have dropped below the mid 50 degree mark. Surface water temperatures will be the same as the bottom water temperatures. As the weather continues to get colder the water temperatures at the bottom will be warmer than that at surface. One the water has turned, Coldwater crappie fishing patterns will start to emerge.

Although the papermouth’s metabolism has dropped the cooling envirement has also triggered the speckled basse’s instinct to feed for the upcoming winter months. The crappie may move slow during the cold water period but they will not pass up a good meal if you present a good crappie bait.

To catch crappie in large deeper lakes and reservoirs during the stable coldwater period you will need crappie fishing rigs set up for a deep water crappie fishing presentation. And ideal crappie bait to use during this period is any small invertabrates such as small crayfish. During the cold water period the water turnover sends the the warmest oxinated water to the bottom , and the coldest water goes to the top. Soon after the water turnover period has stabilized all the crappie and the natural forage will they need will seek the deep water area where the waters are warmest.

To fish the a deep water presentation you will need to use a good deep water slip bobber rig with crappie jigs and crappie jigs with safety pin spinners. A excellent coldwater crappie live bait selection to catch crappie would be small crayfish, crappie minnows, fathead minnows or shiners. You can also catch crappie with a deepwater slop bobber rig fished on the bottom using enough weight and a crappie hook tipped with a live small crayfish as your crappie bait. In larger deep lakes and reservoirs you will find calico bass at deep areas off main lake shorelines in 3o to 45ft of water loacated on a soft bottom area. In shallow bowl shapped lakes with little structure, pole crappies may suspend right in the middle of the lake in 20 to 30 ft of water. In any strawberry bass habitat area, calico bass will suspend 5 to 10ft off the bottom. During the stable coldwater period coldwater period you will seldom find paper mouth near the surface.

The crappies all over their habitat range are called a lot of different names such as calico bass, speckled perch, speckled bass, white perch, pole crappies, strawberry bass, and paper mouth. When calico bass move into the pre summer period which happens when the water temperature goes into the 70 degree range. The pre-summer period is when the white perch, pole crappies move into their regular feeding patterns and they are much more predicable.

The pre-summer period is when the food chain is most plentiful and the speckled bass are in full feeding mode. You can catch crappie on just about any crappie bait using a variety of different crappie fishing rigs. white perch, pole crappies will be found in multiple locations such as weed beds, flats, breaks, and some will always be suspended. They may be concentrated in just one of these areas, but many times during the pre-summer period you will find strawberry bass at all of these locations at the same time.

You will be able to catch crappie with live bait or artificial crappie jigs. Also a combination of crappie jig heads tipped with crappie live bait such as crappie minnows, flat head minnows, shiners, and small crayfish will work well. Actually just about any crappie bait will work well during the pre-summer period.

In deep southern lakes and reservoirs papermoth will appear on primary and secondary points on the main lake where there is a break or drop off to deeper water. Deep timbered channel edges will also hold strawberry bass during the pre-summer period.

In northern lakes papermoth will move to area’s to establish themselves in the habitat they intend to stay with throughout the summer. As long as their natural food source remain the same the speckled bass will remain in these areas. That is why in northern lakes the papermoth will be very predicable during this period and crappie baits such as any live bait like crappie minnows, shiners, fathead minnows, small crayfish, and even fresh mussel meat will work to catch crappie during the pre-summer and summer periods.

Reservoirs offer some fantastic crappie fishing if you know where to Look! The crappie species has been given odd names thought out the years such as calico bass, speckled perch, speckled bass, white perch, pole crappie, strawberry bass, and paper mouth. The key to catching crappie is understanding where the white perch are located in reservoirs during a certain seasonal period. You can have all the latest and greatest crappie fishing gear but it will not do you any good if cannot locate any calico bass.

A reservoir typically is defined as body of water that has been created by damming up a river. Types of reservoirs vary drastically so you need to do your home work before you go crappie fishing in one of these water impoundments and expect to catch crappie. The good thing about reservoirs is that they are man made so in most cases topographical map information is available to do your planning for your next crappie fishing trip.

Reservoirs are classified by their topography type based on the river that was dammed. Like I said before all reservoirs are not the same. Reservoirs range from large deep flooded canyons to shallow lowland wetland impoundments and each different reservoir type will have it’s own unique classification in order to develop your crappie fishing pattern.

One thing that is common about all reserervoirs is that strawberry bass thrive in the majority of them so its well worth the effort to learn what needed to go crappie fishing in them. Just about any crappie bait such as live baits like small shad, crappie minnows, shiners flathead minnows and small crayfish can be used to catch crappie.

Typically a reservoir can be divided into three areas when you are doing your planning. Of course the deepest end will be area number one. This is the area closest to the dam in every reservoir. Area number two is where the new creek arm created by the damming blends in with the old creek channel. This area is always a good spot to locate papermouth and it is likely you can catch crappie here.

A good method of fishing for crappie in area number two is by setting up a number of your crappie fishing rigs at various depths tipped with live bait and artificial crappie jigs. When you start to catch crappie you can anchor off and continue to fish. Make sure you change the depth of all your crappie rods to the same depth that you started catching crappie. Area three is the shallowest of the three areas and is typically the farthest distance away from the dam. Typically these areas are great locations to catch crappie because there is abundance of good forage for crappie food. There also an abundance of structure in this area and during the spring this the area of the reservoir you want to fish because the calico bass will spawn here

No Exit Popup Old School Crappie Fishing Course Link

Crappies can adapt and live in jusy about any type of lake and they go by names throughout the country such as calico bass, speckled perch, speckled bass, white perch, pole crappie, strawberry bass, and papermouth. You will be able to catch crappie in oligotrophic lakes (in back water areas), mesotrophic lakes, and eutrophic lakes.

Oligotrophic lakes are very young in geological terms and you will only be able to catch crappie in these lakes if they are in their late stage of eutrophication, and there is a good chance you will only find white perch in back water areas because the water temperatures are higher. Typically, oligotrophic lakes do not hold large populations of white perch. The majority of oligotrophic lakes are found only in the northern latitudes of north America so there are only a few of these lakes that are located in the papermouth habitat range. You can use a variety of different crappie bait to catch crappie in the back water areas such as live crappie minnows, fathead minnows, and small crayfish. You can also fish crappie jigs with plastic grubs tipped with wax worms around any structure such as sunken trees and logs or brush.

A mesotrophic lake are sometimes called middle aged lakes and will hold good populations of speckled bass. Sand and gravel bottoms are the norm in these lakes and they harbor quite a few large shallow flats. There is abundant vegetation and a very good paper mouth food supply in these lakes. These lakes are typically located in the northern latitude of north America but just south of most oligotrophic lakes. There are normally large populations of papermouth in mesotrophic lakes. You can use traditional crappie live baits such as crappie minnows, fathead minnows, small crayfish, and wax worms to catch crappie. Crappie jigs tipped with plastic grubs and soft plastics will work also. You will find calico bass on the large flats and on the edges of the plentiful vegetation in these lakes.

A eutrophic lake is the oldest type of lake in geological terms and seldom are over 40 ft deep. These lakes are typically referred to as dishpan lakes. If the water is clear there is typically thick shallow weed growth which is a perfect paper mouth habitat to catch crappie. In murky eutrophic lakes there is typically sparse weed growth with bottom being muck, marl, or clay. These lakes have progressed through the mesotrophic stage from amny years of sediment filling in. Typically these lakes are most fertile and hold very large populations of strawberry bass in their early stages eutrophication. You can catch crappie in these lakes by fishing sunken brush and weed line edges. You can use crappie live baits such as crappie minnows, fathead minnows, shiners, small crayfish and wax worms. Artificial crappie jigs tipped with soft plastic grubs and wax worms work well too.

No Exit Popup Old School Crappie Fishing Course Link

The crappies can adapt and live in just about any type of lake and they go by names throughout the country such names as calico bass, speckled perch, speckled bass, white perch, strawberry bass, and paper mouths. During the summer period speckled bass become less aggressive and to catch crappie you need to use some fishing savvy to locate the calico bass and to identify crappie baits that will work best.

The white perch are less aggressive because the natural forage such as crappie minnow fry, insects, plankton , adult crappie minnows, shiners, fathead minnows, small crayfish are plentiful and the white perch can be more selective on what crappie baits such as crappie crank baits, crappie jigs, crappie jigs tipped with live baits that they will attack for food. The speckled bass have replenished their energy levels from the winter and they are attacking anything that looks live food anymore. The papermouths are much more selective during the summer period.

The sun is high in the sky and the dog days of summer have hit the environment above the surface, but the underwater world is in high gear. During the summer period of the year thermo clines form in natural lakes and reservoirs. In the natural scheme of things old mother nature responds by regulating feeding time for all the different species of fish including the paper mouths.

In some big reservoirs the big paper mouths will move entirely out of the shallows and into deeper water areas. The dead of summer is the best time of your to get your gear together anight fishing for crappie nd head out to the lake. You will need a good underwater fishing light and some good led powered lamps to make your night fishing trip more enjoyable. The purpose of the under water fishing light is to attract bait fish to your area and get the papermouths started in a feeding frenzy.

The pole crappies are nocturnal and they feed aggressively at night during the heat of the summer. A good night fishing crappie rig would consist of a slip bobber that has a small battery powered led light that attaches at the top. Place small split shot and a good crappie hook on your line next. Live crappie baits such as crappie minnows, shiners, fathead minnows, small crayfish and even fresh mussel meat work very as crappie bait at night.

Well that concludes my article about Paper Mouth. We wish you the best of luck on your next fishing trip!

Old School Crappie Fishing Family Secrets

crappies have some amazing names that local fisherman have given them over the years such as calico bass, speckled perch, speckled bass, white perch, pole crappie, strawberry bass, and paper mouth you would think you were being took by a bunch of con artists. The crappie spawning season typically starts when water temperature ranges between 64 to 72 fare height speckled bass do not spawn at the same time which is why you can still catch crappies while bait fishing with various crappie live baits and crappie artificial baits during the spawn. Actually even crappies on their nest will attack a crappie bait that is placed near their nest.

The speckled bass spawning period is different in different parts of the speckled bass‘s habitat range. In Florida the paper mouth typically spawn between march and april. In Alabama and Georgia it is also between march and April. In Texas and Oklahoma the strawberry bass spawn starts in march and continues through May. In Kentucky and Tennesse the strawberry bass spawn falls between April and May. In Missouri, Illinois, and Iowa the speckled bass spawn occurs between April and June, Ohio pole crappie have a spawning period between April through July. Oregon has a spawning period between march and June. In Minnesota , Michigan, and Wisconsin the paper mouth spawn between May and June. In Ontario Canada the speckled bass spawn between June and August.

The first paper mouth to spawn in any areas will be the ones located in backwater coves and bays. The last last speckled bass to spawn are the ones located on north facing bays and lake shorelines that warm slowly.

During the actual spawn the female will leave the her eggs the leave he next and the male will guard the next. The male speckled perch will fan the eggs until the fry hatch. The eggs will typically hatch in about one week. The male will remain and guard the fry for about two weeks after the hatch. During the spawn to catch male crappie you will need to put your crappie bait right over the nest. Crappie crank baits or crappie jigs fished vertically will work. The male crappie will attack just about anything that comes close to the nest during this period . The female crappies can be caught in deeper water because that is where they head after they lay their eggs A good way to find the female white perch After the spawn is to drift deep water structure points near the edges using multiple crappie fishing rigs with a variation of live crappie baits as well as artificial crappie baits.

Old School Crappie Fishing Family Secrets

crappies are often mentioned by local fisherman with names such as calico bass, speckled perch, speckled bass, white perch, pole crappie, strawberry bass and papermouth. This fish species is a migrational by nature and tends to follow the natural forage. When you are bait fishing for crappie you need to take into account the seasonal habits and locations. In addition to selecting the crappie baits you need to understand where the speckled bass will be located during the season of the year you are crappie fishing.

To catch crappie while bait fishing it is not enough to just select a good crappie bait. You nee to understand the pole crappie’s diet and activity levels and behavior. Their is no set calendar for the changing seasons when you are targeting crappie. Actually the changing of the seasons is dicated by the needs of the papermouth. The changes of physical seasons forces the the speckled perch to change their habits because they will need to seek the type of habitat that allows them to still locate a good abundant food source.

The bottom line is that speckled bass change their habits, feeding patterns and location to seek out an abundant food source, and in many respects is the driving force of their annual migrations from one area to another. So you probably are smart folks and figured out already that you much change your crappie fishing techniques with the changing seasons too. You will be have to be making changes to your crappie bait and crappie fishing rig selections with the change of seasons when you are bait fishing for crappie.

We all wish we could change our crappie fishing style by looking at the calendar but unfortunately it just doesn’t work that way. The typical changes we see on land with the change of the seasons such as from winter to spring, from spring to summer, summer to fall , and fall to winter are not the same under the water. Under the water changes are dictated by the length of daylight which is known as the photo period. Animals from small microorganisms such as zooplankton all the way up to the fiercest of game fish react to these changes. The change in the length of daylight will cause speckled perch to migrate, spawn, and to change their feeding habits.

There are a few crappie fishing calendars that can be purchased that identify specific details of what when and where for crappie fishing seasonal changes. The best one I have come across is published by in-Fisherman and is designed to identify seasonal changes based on the fishing activity levels and seasonal needs of the calico bass.

I have had a great time writing this article we hope you enjoyed our information about Speckled Perch. We wish you the best of luck on your next fishing trip!
